Something's wrong with the galaxy and I don't know what it is. It used to be better, of course it did, or so they say. In the golden age of legend, with the Republic and the Jedi Order, when there was enough to eat and enough hope, when people could lift their eyes and see beyond the horizon, beyond the day. Children were born happy and some even grew up rich. The Jedi disappeared. The Republic was replaced by the Empire. Then, the Empire fell. Now we've got this. Lawmakers stand against the screaming elements and all comers, keeping safe as many as they can. Medics and Gearcutters run constant battle against there's not enough and blaster bolts fly and everything breaks. Volatiles, Vigilants, Weaponized, and Undaunted carve out what they can and defend it with blood and blasters. Operators search and scavenge, looking for that opportunity, that one perfect chance. Monarchs remember beauty, or invent beauty anew, cup it in their hands and whisper come and see, and don't worry now about what it will cost you. And Brain-pickers, oh, Brain-pickers see what none of the rest of us will: the world's psychic maelstrom, the terrible desperation and hate pressing in at the edge of all perception, it is the world now. Farscape Friday - ImpulseScape 04

In March 1999, the Sci-Fi Channel premiered the TV show Farscape, which ran for four seasons. The show followed contemporary Earth astronaut John Crichton, who was shot through a wormhole, ending up in a distant part of the universe aboard a ship — a living ship — full of strange alien lifeforms in the midst of escaping a ruthless galactic military organization known as the Peacekeepers. Farscape was weird and wild, sexy and smart, easily my favorite sci-fi show of all time. In March of 2020, I'm running four sessions of Impulse Drive set in the Farscape universe. We are NOT playing as members of the TV show cast. We'll be making up wholly new characters who exist during the loose timeframe of the show. We'll be using Impulse Drive playbooks (archetypes), characters are members of the Farscape species. We'll tell stories in the Uncharted Territories during the conflicts between the Peacekeepers and the Scarran Empire, trying to eke out your own existence as a crew.

Have A Familiar Ring - Actual Play

As part of a new series on the Gauntlet, I offered a selection of some of my smaller games through SWORD QUEEN PRESENTS! In this session we play HAVE A FAMILIAR RING, which was created for the Your Move Jam (https://itch.io/jam/your-move-jam). The game we submitted had to have just ONE move, Powered by the Apocalypse style. In this GM-less game, the players create a world of magic. One will become the magic-user, while the other players will become familiars, each attached to a ring the magic-user wields. The game is very open to interpretation and whatever tone the group is in the mood for. In this session we had a very charming Ghibli-Inspired story, starring a young but eager anime protagonist and her self-serious familiars. One looks like a teapot, the other a little clockwork knight! Together they deal with an unbound familiar and deal with a LOT of paperwork. The players have a much easier time flowing between weak moves and strong moves, picking up lures, and making this story truly their own. I had a LOT of fun taking on the role of Justicars. I learned a lot of great stuff during this playtest, and I look forward to tweaking Oathbreakers to truly make it shine! Important note: For the purposes of this playtest, I adjusted the Moment of Truth mechanics so it'd be easier to reach the endgame requirements for Oathbreakers. Oathbreakers is a tabletop roleplaying game about a group of magic users, known as arcanists. The world of magic cannot be perceived by the mundane world, and must be hidden from them. As arcanists you are victims of the Conspiracy. You have been declared Oathbreakers, and most of the magical community doesn’t want to have anything to do with you. Together you will investigate what the Conspiracy is, what their nefarious plans are, and gather the clues you need to confront them. We must destroy the Conspiracy before they destroy us. The game is inspired by Vertigo comics from the 90s (Hellblazer, The Sandman, Saga of the Swamp Thing, Black Orchid, Invisibles, the Books of Magic); as well as the urban fantasy genre in general. Magic here is glorious and reality warping, based on ritual, and humans are just one of many sentient beings of magic that exist. In this first session of our playtest, we make characters, make choices for our setting elements, and get into a bit of role play. We hit that Vertigo Comics from the 90s vibe real hard and I'm so happy with what we have on the table! Can't wait to get into it next week and see where our story takes us. Oathbreakers is a tabletop roleplaying game about a group of magic users, known as arcanists. The world of magic cannot be perceived by the mundane world, and must be hidden from them. As arcanists you are victims of the Conspiracy. You have been declared Oathbreakers, and most of the magical community doesn’t want to have anything to do with you. Together you will investigate what the Conspiracy is, what their nefarious plans are, and gather the clues you need to confront them. We must destroy the Conspiracy before they destroy us. The game is inspired by Vertigo comics from the 90s (Hellblazer, The Sandman, Saga of the Swamp Thing, Black Orchid, Invisibles, the Books of Magic); as well as the urban fantasy genre in general. Magic here is glorious and reality warping, based on ritual, and humans are just one of many sentient beings of magic that exist. Something's wrong with the galaxy and I don't know what it is. It used to be better, of course it did, or so they say. In the golden age of legend, with the Republic and the Jedi Order, when there was enough to eat and enough hope, when people could lift their eyes and see beyond the horizon, beyond the day. Children were born happy and some even grew up rich. The Jedi disappeared. The Republic was replaced by the Empire. Then, the Empire fell. Now we've got this. Lawmakers stand against the screaming elements and all comers, keeping safe as many as they can. Medics and Gearcutters run constant battle against there's not enough and blaster bolts fly and everything breaks. Volatiles, Vigilants, Weaponized, and Undaunted carve out what they can and defend it with blood and blasters. Operators search and scavenge, looking for that opportunity, that one perfect chance. Monarchs remember beauty, or invent beauty anew, cup it in their hands and whisper come and see, and don't worry now about what it will cost you. And Brain-pickers, oh, Brain-pickers see what none of the rest of us will: the world's psychic maelstrom, the terrible desperation and hate pressing in at the edge of all perception, it is the world now. Farscape Friday - ImpulseScape 02

In March, 1999, the Sci-Fi Channel premiered the TV show Farscape, which ran for four seasons. The show followed contemporary Earth astronaut John Crichton, who was shot through a wormhole, ending up in a distant part of the universe aboard a ship — a living ship — full of strange alien lifeforms in the midst of escaping a ruthless galactic military organization known as the Peacekeepers. Farscape was weird and wild, sexy and smart, easily my favorite sci-fi show of all time. In March of 2020, I'm running four sessions of Impulse Drive set in the Farscape universe. We are NOT playing as members of the TV show cast. We'll be making up wholly new characters who exist during the loose timeframe of the show. We'll be using Impulse Drive playbooks (archetypes), characters are members of the Farscape species. We'll tell stories in the Uncharted Territories during the conflicts between the Peacekeepers and the Scarran Empire, trying to eek out your own existence as a crew.
