GCOG - Hit the Nazi - Retrieve the Ark

Alun R facilitates a one-shot of his hack of 'Hit the Street - Defend the Block' (by Rich Rogers) for play as Pulp Heroes rather then street level Supers. This session was organsied as part of February 2021's Gauntlet Community Open Gaming weekend (GCOG) where we encourage gamers to come and try out online gaming and the Gauntlet's play culture (www.gauntlet-rpg.com). Nelson (the Hustler/Gumshoe), Lucy (the Friend/Air Ace), and Irene (the Professor/Inventor) literally run in to Bruce (the Daredevil/Explorer) as they pursue the kidnappers of 'Gus' the world famous boxing kangaroo through the rainy streets of New Gauntlet City. There's an FBI Special Agent, and a clue that takes them to Casablanca in search of Gus' mate. Then ... mayhem at a secret Nazi desert base, an eccentric hollow-earther and his sister-in-law, and the biggest kangaroo you ever did see ... A recordnig snafu means that the last Act is text only ... Nelson sneaks into the camp and bushwhacks a Nazi before squeezing into his uniform and entering the supply tent where he finds Bruce still in the crate. Meanwhile, Lucy makes her way onto the German transport plane that they tracked to the secret desert base; it's parked beside the a convenient fuel truck ... BOOOOOM! Soldiers approach the supply tent but Nelson convinces them that 'Die Kangaroo ist ... Gone!' Another squad are seen hustling a prisoner to a truck and Nelson distracts them while Bruce charges in and lays about them with his cricket bat, freeing the prisoner ... Professor Sterk. Lucy and Irene arrive just as other soldiers get organised and level their SMGs at our heroes ... Nelson drives a truck into them providing an escape route for the others. Professor Sterk directs them to an eerily silent, deserted, ancient temple with contrasting ancient pillars and statues, and the new antenna radials and spotlights. Sterk stammered, "The fools. They did it!" As we head down a spiral ramp into the earth Sterk explains the Nazis are trying to open a gate to the Hollow Earth. They didn't know what they were unleashing ... in the depths there's a rumbling growl of something huge. At the end of the stairs, there is a long tunnel into the mountainside that is lit by a string of light bulbs that only provide a small amount of light in the darkness. At the end of the tunnel is a large open area with an energy portal to the Hollow Earth. Inside the room, there is a large Kangaroo Kaiju creature (see pic in Faces and Places) that roars at us. Above the Kangaroo is a smaller cage that houses what must me Gus' mate. Lucy ran over to the wench on the wall, and slowly started to lower the cage to the floor of the cavern. Irene said that she'd turn off the portal machine--one way or another--but Bruce had to get the Giant Kangaroo back through the portal before that happened! Bruce ran over to the Kangaroo, and saw many, many bodies of the dead Nazi's that the Kangaroo Kaiju had killed as they had tried to capture it. He took his chance to distract the Giant Kangaroo into following him back toward the portal. Irene worked the machine to shut it down, but, just as she was about to, Special Agent Jessie Edge stepped out of the shadows with a pistol held at the ready. "Step away from the machine." he said. Lucy grabbed the rope from the decending cage, and cut it behind her. She swung across the cavern to intercept Edge, but he swung his pistol around to shoot in her direction several times (Mike didn't succeed on his roll and took Spark damage down to "Oh no!".) Bruce ran away from the Giant Kangaroo toward the portal. Through it, he could see the grassland plains of the Hollow Earth. There was also an Aussie sized gap between the bottom of the portal and the cavern floor. Just as the Giant was about to grab Bruce, he slid under the portal--through the gap, and was save on the other side. He lost his hat through the portal (from Spark damage). Irene used the distraction from Lucy's swing to yank the power cable out of the machine and grab Edge. The electricy from the machine caused them both to convulse and fall to the floor. Just as the Giant Kangaroo stumbled through the portal, the portal winked out, and the cavern went dark. In the dim lights, we could just make out the shape of Gus coming into the cavern and going over to the cage where his mate was located. We swung open the door to the cage, and they left--happily ever after. That's why, to this day, there is a kangaroo population in Nortern Africa. Final post-credit shot shows the burned out hulk of the truck Nelson drove into the soldiers. The camera circles the wreck to find ... Nelson leaning agasnt it lighting a cigarette ... it takes more than a violent explosion to finish a hard-bitten Pulp Hero ...
